“Everyone Loves a West Wood Walk… Especially When There’s a Fab Pub on the Other Side”

Ah, West Wood, Hadleigh’s leafy enigma. A sprawling, ancient woodland where time stands still, boots get muddy, and you’ll definitely question your sense of direction at least once. Regular visitors will proudly tell you it hasn’t changed much since 1750, which is impressive considering I can’t even keep a houseplant alive for more than a month.
Dog (and beer lovers) exit via the Daws Heath Road access point. Pro tip: it’s conveniently close to the Woodman’s Arms pub, because nothing pairs better with a woodland stroll or dog walk than the comforting promise of a cheese board and a pint just around the corner. I call that strategic hiking.
Inside the wood, nature is in full performance mode. I tripped over what I now know is a “coppice stool” (woodland speak for an ancient tree stump with attitude), dodged a very bold squirrel, and swear I made unsettling eye contact with the Big Bad Wolf but with hindsight that might have been a fellow walker in a furry Winter coat! The Prittle Brook whispered nearby, just loudly enough to lure one of my socks into soggy doom.
The flowers in Spring are magical. So magical, in fact, that they attract every dog walker, nature lover, and Instagram influencer within a 10-mile radius.
West Wood is a glorious mix of ancient history and muddy misadventure. It’s dog-friendly, free to explore, and full of wildlife that seem mildly annoyed you’ve interrupted their day. And if you’ve had enough of the wild and want to return to civilisation (or crisps), you’re only a few steps from a pub with a cold drink and warm welcome.
