Did you know that with a population of only around 150 people, South Fambridge is one of Essex’s smallest villages but it has an aviation story that’s anything but small!
South Fambridge may look like a peaceful riverside village today, but it’s believed to have been home to Britain’s very first airfield. Even more incredible, the man behind it, Noel Pemberton-Billing, later founded Supermarine, the company that would go on to build the iconic Spitfire.
So, in a way, the story of one of Britain’s greatest wartime aircraft began right here on the banks of the River Crouch just outside Rochford. A tiny village with a truly huge place in British aviation history!
