47 Trees, 47 Lives: Canvey’s Living Memorial

At Tewkes Creek on Canvey Island, 47 trees quietly stand as a living tribute to 47 local men who served during the First World War and never returned home. Planted a century after the Armistice, they remain a poignant reminder of sacrifice.
47 Trees, 47 Lives: Canvey’s Living Memorial

Did you know there’s a living First World War memorial at Tewkes Creek on Canvey Island? Tewkes Creek is part of the island’s network of historic creeks and waterways.

But there’s something particularly special here.

In 2018, 47 trees were planted, one for each of the 47 #Canvey men who went away to serve during the First World War and never came home. They were officially dedicated on Remembrance Sunday, 11 November 2018, exactly 100 years after the #Armistice.

It’s great to see them all still looking so healthy and well established. 47 trees for 47 Canvey men who never came home.

Lest we forget.
