Hadleigh's Hidden Engineering Marvel

Did you know that Hadleigh's iconic Benfleet Water Tower has been a landmark since 1903. Constructed during the Edwardian era, it was built to hold an incredible 40,000 gallons of water (around 182,000 litres) enough to fill more than 2,300 baths. At the turn of the 20th century, this was an extraordinary feat of engineering. Most people still travelled by horse and cart, motor cars were a rare sight, many homes had no electricity, and the Wright brothers had only just achieved the first powered flight.

Standing 90 feet tall, the tower was designed to support a cast-iron tank weighing more than 180 tonnes when full. Achieving this required exceptional engineering skill, careful planning, and remarkable craftsmanship, all without the modern machinery and technology we rely on today.

More than 120 years later, the Benfleet Water Tower continues to dominate the local skyline. It remains a powerful reminder of the ambition, innovation, and enduring quality of Edwardian engineering.
